UK Weather Alert: When Will the Rain End? Met Office Warns of Persistent Downpours (2026)

Are you tired of the relentless rain? It seems like the UK has been drowning in downpours, and there’s no end in sight. But here’s where it gets even more concerning: despite the constant deluge, forecasters warn that the wet weather is here to stay—at least for now. Let’s dive into what the Met Office is saying and why this rainy saga might be far from over.

The UK has been battered by heavy rain every single day of 2026 so far, leaving many to wonder when the clouds will finally part. A yellow rain warning is currently in place for the West Midlands, parts of southern England, and Wales, lasting until 9 PM on Friday. And this is the part most people miss: the ground is already saturated, meaning homes and businesses are at risk of flooding, power supplies could be disrupted, and surface water flooding is almost inevitable.

South West England and South Wales have seen a staggering 50% more rainfall than usual for January, with rain falling every day of the year so far. To put it in perspective, England received 150% of its long-term average rainfall last month, according to the Environment Agency (EA). The South West region, in particular, saw a jaw-dropping 184% of its average January rainfall. Even more alarming, the South East has already received 32% of its February average rainfall in just the first three days of the month.

Rainfall totals for the week from January 28 to February 3 varied dramatically, ranging from 13mm in eastern England to 43mm in the South West. And the bad news doesn’t stop there: forecasters predict that the rain will continue daily in these areas through Sunday. Dan Stroud, an operational meteorologist with the Met Office, sums it up bluntly: ‘Unfortunately, there’s no end in sight.’

So, what’s causing this endless cycle of rain? Stroud explains that a large area of high pressure to the far north and east of the UK is blocking low-pressure systems from moving through. Until this high-pressure system shifts, the forecast isn’t likely to change. Adding to the misery, the jet stream is positioned far to the south, bringing exceptionally wet weather to Spain and Portugal as well.

On Friday, another band of rain will sweep northward across the South West, bringing heavy bursts. Saturday will see more of the same, with intense showers lashing the south in the morning before moving into Wales and the Midlands. By Sunday, yet another band of rain is expected to hit the southern and western parts of the UK, though other areas might catch a slight break.

Northern Ireland is also under a yellow rain warning until midnight on Friday, with higher places potentially facing up to 80mm of rain—though most areas are expected to see around 20mm. Meanwhile, Scotland will continue to grapple with persistent cloud cover and rain, particularly in the east, including Aberdeen.

But it’s not all doom and gloom. Parts of East Anglia, the South East, and even western Scotland might see some brightness breaking through on Saturday. And this is where it gets controversial: while some are desperate for a dry spell, others argue that this rain is crucial for replenishing water supplies after previous droughts. What do you think? Is this rain a blessing in disguise, or has it overstayed its welcome?

As we wait for the skies to clear, one thing is certain: the UK’s weather is a topic that never fails to spark debate. So, here’s a thought-provoking question for you: With climate change altering weather patterns, are we witnessing the new normal? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below!
