In a compelling turn of events, Trey Mancini, the former slugger for the Baltimore Orioles and a remarkable cancer survivor, is making another earnest attempt at reviving his major league career. He has recently secured a minor league contract with the Los Angeles Angels that also includes an opportunity to participate in their big league spring training camp.
As of Wednesday, the Angels announced Mancini as one of the 27 non-roster players invited to their training session taking place in Tempe, Arizona.
At 33 years old, Mancini boasts an impressive batting average of .263, complemented by 129 home runs and 400 runs batted in over the course of his seven-season career. However, it’s important to note that he hasn’t set foot in the major leagues since 2023. His journey began with six seasons at the Orioles, where he reached his peak in 2019, smashing a career-high 29 home runs.
Mancini's path took a challenging turn when he was sidelined for the entire 2020 season due to a significant surgery that involved the removal of a malignant tumor from his colon. Fortunately, he made a triumphant return to the Orioles in 2021 and subsequently earned a coveted World Series ring in 2022 after being traded to the Houston Astros.
In 2023, he spent part of the season playing with the Chicago Cubs. Following that, Mancini has been involved in the minor league systems of various teams, including the Cincinnati Reds, Miami Marlins, and Arizona Diamondbacks.
Interestingly, Mancini opted out of a minor-league contract with Arizona last July after achieving a commendable batting average of .308 along with 16 home runs while playing for Triple-A Reno.
