In the picturesque setting of Somerset's Mendip Hills, a unique architectural transformation has taken place, resulting in a home that seamlessly blends history and modern design. This project, named the House of Blue Lias, is a testament to the vision of London-based architecture studio Forgeworks, founded by director Chris Hawkins.
The challenge presented to Forgeworks was to unite a 19th-century stone farmhouse with an adjacent barn, both of which lacked a cohesive spatial hierarchy. The solution? A carefully designed extension that acts as a bridge, creating a harmonious whole.
"The site is a classic rural conversion story," Hawkins explains. "Our task was to bring order and unity without overpowering the existing structures." And so, instead of treating the farmhouse and barn as separate entities, Forgeworks conceived a new linking structure that became the heart of the home.
The Design Approach
Inspired by the clients' appreciation for American mid-century architecture, the extension takes on a low-lying, horizontal form. This design choice not only pays homage to a beloved architectural style but also creates a sense of balance and connection with the surrounding landscape.
The extension is a study in contrasts, with five sliding glass panels that open up to a swimming pool terrace, inviting the outdoors in. The use of Blue Lias stone, a local limestone variety, adds a touch of regional authenticity and a sense of permanence. This stone, along with timber and stainless steel finishes, creates a tactile and durable interior that is both warm and precise.
Revitalizing the Barn
Within the barn, Forgeworks undertook a meticulous renovation, stripping back the interiors to reveal the raw beauty of the stone walls. New insulation, solar panels, and air source heat pumps were introduced, ensuring the space is both comfortable and environmentally conscious. Externally, a pale rendered finish connects the barn aesthetically with the farmhouse, further emphasizing the unity of the property.
The barn now serves multiple purposes, offering additional bedrooms, bathrooms, a playroom, study, and even a garage for the clients' vintage cars. It's a transformation that breathes new life into an old structure, making it a functional and enjoyable part of the home.
