Major news in the college football world! Wide receiver Johntay Cook, formerly of Syracuse, is making a move to Ole Miss through the NCAA Transfer Portal. This is a significant shift, and here's what you need to know.
Cook, who has one season of eligibility remaining, initially joined Syracuse for the 2025 season after spending two seasons at Texas. During his single season with the Orange, he made 12 appearances, catching 45 passes for 549 yards and two touchdowns. Before his time at Syracuse, Cook played in 18 games for the Longhorns, accumulating 32 catches for 273 yards and two touchdowns.
Before college, Cook was a highly-rated prospect. Coming out of DeSoto (TX) high school, he was a five-star recruit and ranked as the No. 31 overall player and the No. 3 wide receiver in the 2023 recruiting cycle according to the Rivals Industry Rankings.
This transfer marks the 21st player to commit to Ole Miss this offseason via the NCAA Transfer Portal. At the time of his commitment, Cook was ranked as the No. 63 wide receiver in On3’s 2026 Transfer Portal Player Rankings.
But here's where it gets interesting: Ole Miss is entering a new chapter under head coach Pete Golding, who is stepping into his first full year. Golding stepped in to coach the Rebels in the College Football Playoff after Lane Kiffin departed to lead LSU. Under Golding's leadership, Ole Miss achieved victories against Tulane and Georgia in the CFP, although they ultimately lost to Miami in the semifinals.
Golding is optimistic about the future, stating, “A lot of these fans have invested a lot in a lot of different ways over a lot of years. And they deserve this. They deserve a better outcome, but they deserve these opportunities, and they deserve for these opportunities to be on a consistent basis. That’s the expectation that our chancellor and Keith [Carter] has set for us.”
And this is the part most people miss: Johntay Cook isn't the only Syracuse wide receiver joining Ole Miss. Darrell Gill, another transfer from Syracuse, has also committed. In the 2025 season, Gill recorded 32 catches for 506 yards and a career-high five touchdowns.
