The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) is on the hunt for a talented researcher to join their Sahel/West Africa Programme (SWAP), a crucial part of their Conflict, Peace, and Security research cluster. This role is a unique opportunity for those passionate about quantitative research and making a real impact on peacebuilding efforts.
Unleash Your Quantitative Expertise:
SIPRI's SWAP team is dedicated to understanding the complex dynamics of conflict, peace, governance, and security in the Sahel and West Africa. As a researcher, you'll dive into mixed-method research, collaborating with diverse organizations and institutions. But here's where it gets exciting: your expertise in survey design, sampling, and statistical analysis will be the linchpin of this role.
Key Responsibilities:
- Research Design and Data Collection: Craft research methodologies, sample strategies, and perception studies. Your coding skills with Kobo Toolbox or ODK will shine as you train and support data collection teams, ensuring top-notch field operations.
- Data Analysis and Visualization: Dive into statistical analyses using R or Stata, and bring data to life through QGIS, Tableau, or Power BI. You'll be the guardian of SWAP's databases and documentation processes.
- Research Outputs and Knowledge Sharing: Contribute to impactful reports, policy briefs, and articles. Support fundraising efforts and mentor junior staff to foster a culture of learning.
- Ethics and Compliance: Uphold ethical standards and data protection throughout the research process, including fieldwork and partner meetings in Africa.
The Ideal Candidate:
SIPRI is seeking a researcher who loves quantitative research and methodological work. You should be a team player, comfortable in multicultural environments, and an excellent communicator. A passion for peace and security research is essential, as is the willingness to travel within the Sahel region when security permits.
Qualifications and Skills:
- A Master's degree in social sciences, statistics, econometrics, or related fields is a must.
- Proven quantitative research experience, with expertise in sampling and research design.
- Proficiency in survey coding with Kobo Toolbox or ODK and data analysis using R or Stata.
- Fluency in French and English is required, along with knowledge of Sahel/West Africa's conflict and security landscape.
- Bonus points for experience with visualization tools like QGIS, Power BI, or Tableau, and fieldwork in the region.
What SIPRI Offers:
SIPRI provides an international research environment with opportunities to collaborate across various programs. They foster a supportive and inclusive workplace, ensuring your work aligns with their mission and values.
Application and Contact:
To apply, submit your CV, a compelling cover letter, and a writing sample by December 19, 2025. Shortlisted candidates may be invited to complete a work sample or test. For inquiries, contact Virginie Baudais or Luc Vandegoor via email.
And here's the exciting part: this role is not just about research; it's about contributing to peace and security in a region that needs it. So, if you're ready to make a difference and meet the qualifications, don't hesitate to apply! But remember, this is a competitive role, and only the most dedicated and skilled researchers will be considered.
