In a tragic and shocking incident, a man was fatally shot after he confronted police officers with a bow and arrow during a welfare check at a rural property in New South Wales. On January 16, 2026, around 4:18 PM, police were called to a home on Quia Road in Gunnedah, situated approximately 75 kilometers west of Tamworth, due to concerns raised about the man’s well-being.
Assistant Commissioner Andrew Holland described the event as a "split-second decision" made by one of the responding officers. Initially, law enforcement was engaged in conversation with the man outside his residence. However, he later retreated inside, only to return with a bow and arrow, aiming it at the officers, which prompted them to take evasive action behind their vehicle. In response to the perceived threat, an officer discharged their firearm, resulting in the man being shot once. Despite the immediate assistance provided by paramedics, he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Holland emphasized the critical nature of these rapid decisions that officers must make during tense situations, stating, "These matters, obviously, are split-second decisions by police on the scene." He assured the public that a thorough investigation would be conducted to evaluate the circumstances surrounding this tragic event.
A dedicated critical incident team from the State Crime Command's homicide squad is now leading the inquiry. Detectives have been dispatched from Sydney to Gunnedah to begin their work, and it is anticipated that the investigation will span several days to ensure a comprehensive review of all relevant details.
Additionally, the Professional Standards Command will oversee the investigation, with further scrutiny from the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission to uphold transparency and accountability.
The police were initially alerted when local residents reported that the man was obstructing traffic on the road, a two-lane route with a speed limit of 100 km/h, causing significant disruption as vehicles were unable to pass in either direction.
Holland also noted that the mental health of the deceased would be a key focus of their inquiries, and police have begun conversations with the man's family to gather more context about his situation. However, he refrained from disclosing specific information regarding the man’s identity or age.
This incident unfolds nearly five months after a heartbreaking occurrence in which two police officers were shot and killed on a rural property in Victoria’s alpine region. The person accused in that case, Dezi Freeman, remains at large despite extensive efforts by law enforcement to apprehend him.
