Bold shift at the top of MLBPA as Tony Clark exits amid a rocky moment for the union. Bruce Meyer steps in as interim executive director, with Matt Nussbaum promoted to interim deputy executive director to help steady the ship ahead of a likely heated round of negotiations with team owners this spring.
Clark, a former All-Star first baseman who has led the Major League Baseball Players Association since 2013, resigned on Tuesday just months before a fresh round of labor talks. The current collective bargaining agreement runs through December 1.
The resignation came after an outside-lawyer investigation uncovered evidence of an inappropriate relationship between Clark and his sister-in-law, who has worked for the union since 2023. The information surfaced as the MLBPA responded to a federal probe into its finances and governance by hiring an independent attorney. The investigator found the relationship, though the person briefed on the matter asked to remain anonymous because the detail wasn’t publicly released.
Bruce Meyer, 64, explained that the critical information only emerged within the previous 72 hours, emphasizing that the union’s subcommittee acted promptly. He credited Clark for prioritizing players and noted that Clark’s decision to step down was made in the interest of the players.
The interim leadership lineup also includes Matt Nussbaum, who moves from general counsel to interim deputy executive director to assist Meyer.
Scott Boras, a veteran super-agent, praised the appointment, saying players trust these leaders to uphold the union’s long-standing goals.
Meyer, a seasoned labor attorney, joined the union staff in 2018 after three decades at Weil, Gotshal & Manges and a stint with the NHL Players Association starting in 2016. He previously guided the MLBPA through a 99-day lockout that produced a five-year deal in March 2022, narrowly avoiding a season drop. He rose to deputy executive director in 2022 and has long been recognized for his bargaining expertise.
The MLBPA launched its spring-training outreach, delaying by a day and kicking off with the Kansas City Royals in camp. Meyer reflected on the emotional weight of the past few days, acknowledging the collective concern for Clark while stressing that the players ultimately drive the union’s course.
On the bargaining horizon, the union remains firm on opposing a salary cap, signaling that a cap proposal from MLB could complicate negotiations and raise the specter of a work stoppage—potentially the first since 1995.
Meyer asserted that negotiations would proceed with the same resolve and preparation the players have shown for years. He underscored that leadership may evolve, but players and their priorities define the union’s direction and bargaining stance.
Regarding potential ethical policy updates, including restrictions on hiring relatives, Meyer indicated that a review is underway.
