Traffic chaos looms in Middlesbrough as major roadworks kick off, but is it worth the hassle?
Motorists, brace yourselves! The A172 Marton Road/A174 Interchange is about to become a hotbed of construction activity, and your daily commute might just turn into a frustrating crawl. But here's the catch: these roadworks are not just your average pothole-filling endeavor. They're a comprehensive package of repairs and upgrades, promising a smoother ride in the long run.
The project, which began on March 2nd and is slated to continue until autumn 2026, involves a series of intricate tasks. These include concrete repairs beneath the bridge, a new waterproofing system, fresh kerbs and footways, resurfacing, and the addition of pedestrian fencing and vehicle safety barriers. But here's where it gets controversial: to accommodate these improvements, a temporary contraflow system will be implemented, potentially causing significant traffic disruptions.
And the impact is already being felt. Traffic maps on March 3rd revealed lengthy tailbacks near the junction, especially on Dixons Bank and the eastbound A174. Motorists are warned to expect delays, with the contraflow system reducing the north-south traffic capacity and altering turning permissions at certain points.
But there's a silver lining. Middlesbrough Council and Esh Construction have teamed up to keep the bridge open during the works, avoiding the need for lengthy detours. Advanced warning signs will also be placed to prepare drivers for any full closures.
So, while the road ahead may be bumpy for a while, it's all in the name of progress. But is the temporary inconvenience worth the long-term benefits? That's a question for the drivers to answer.
