A city's trust in its water supply is shattered! The recent water contamination crisis in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, has led to a startling revelation: residents no longer trust the municipal tap water, even in a city renowned for its cleanliness. This has resulted in a surge in bottled water purchases, burdening the finances of many.
The situation is dire, with reports of six to sixteen deaths and over 200 hospitalizations due to an outbreak of vomiting and diarrhea in Bhagirathpura, a neighborhood with a significant low to middle-income population. The cause? Contaminated drinking water.
"We're terrified to drink tap water now," said Sunita, a local resident, to PTI on January 3, 2026. She revealed that her family is now purchasing drinking water jars, spending Rs 20 to Rs 30 per jar. Sunita also claimed that the area has been receiving dirty water for years, with resident complaints falling on deaf ears.
To ensure safety, stall owners are using bottled water to make tea, a testament to the depth of distrust. Tea stall owner Tushar Verma noted that despite the switch to bottled water, tea prices remain unchanged.
Local authorities are responding by launching an information campaign in Bhagirathpura, educating residents about water safety. "We're advising people to boil water for 15 minutes and use only the drinking water supplied by municipal tankers," said District Magistrate Shivam Verma. Chlorination of municipal water pipelines and tube wells is also underway, a proven method to eliminate pathogens and make water safe for consumption.
But here's where it gets controversial: while officials confirm six deaths, residents claim the toll is higher, including a six-month-old child. This discrepancy raises questions about the accuracy of official reports and the potential for underreporting.
Indore's water supply originates from the Narmada River, sourced from Jalud in the nearby Khargone district, approximately 80 kilometers away. The city receives water through taps every other day.
In response to the crisis, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has ordered the transfer of the municipal commissioner and the suspension of other officials. The government's status report to the High Court assures that the outbreak is under control with rigorous monitoring in place.
And this is the part most people miss: the crisis highlights the vulnerability of water supplies, even in a city known for its cleanliness.
