A bold statement from George Russell has sent shockwaves through the Formula 1 community, as he warns McLaren of an 'unacceptable' move that could decide the fate of the 2026 championship. With the title race heating up, Russell has made it clear that any attempt to manipulate the outcome through team orders would be crossing a line.
The stage is set for an epic finale in Abu Dhabi, where Lando Norris, Max Verstappen, and Oscar Piastri are all in with a chance of claiming the crown. Norris leads the pack with 408 points, closely followed by Verstappen on 396, and Piastri hot on his heels with 392.
But here's where it gets controversial... If Verstappen takes the chequered flag, Norris must finish on the podium to secure the title. However, there's a twist: Piastri could play the role of kingmaker. Imagine a scenario where Verstappen leads, with Piastri in second or third and Norris in fourth. Unless Piastri steps aside, Verstappen will be crowned champion.
And this is the part most people miss... McLaren bosses Zak Brown and Andrea Stella have stated that team orders will not be used as long as both drivers have a mathematical chance. Brown is even willing to let Verstappen win if it means fairness for his drivers.
When asked about the possibility of team orders, Russell made his stance clear. He believes it would be unreasonable to ask a driver like Piastri, who is still in contention for the championship, to move aside for his teammate. Russell draws parallels to past seasons, like the Checo-Max or Barrichello-Schumacher eras, where only one driver had a shot at the title and the other graciously stepped aside.
"It's one thing when only one driver has a chance, but when both are in the hunt, it's a different story," Russell emphasized. "Both drivers deserve a fair shot, and if one loses out, it should be because the other drove better. That's racing, and that's how it should be."
