Davis County's First Measles Case: A Warning for the Community
Farmington, Utah - Health officials in Davis County are sounding the alarm after confirming the county's first measles case. An adult resident was infected, and the health department is urging the public to take notice and take action.
The infection was detected over the weekend, and the resident visited three locations in Clearfield, Ogden, and Layton on November 26th. The health department has released a detailed warning, identifying the potential exposure sites and times:
- Kid Zone, 340 W. Antelope Drive, Clearfield: 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
- Treehouse Children's Museum, 347 22nd Street, Ogden: 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.
- Walmart Supercenter, 745 W. Hill Field Road, Layton: 6:20 p.m. to 7:20 p.m.
Measles is highly contagious and can remain in the air for up to two hours after an infected person leaves. Anyone present at these locations during the specified times may have been exposed, even without direct contact with the resident. This highlights the importance of vigilance and prompt action.
Sarah Willardson, the communicable disease and epidemiology division director, emphasizes the effectiveness of the MMR vaccine in preventing measles. She states, "Being fully vaccinated not only protects the individual but also safeguards their loved ones, including vulnerable children. It plays a crucial role in limiting the spread of the disease within the community."
The health department strongly advises anyone who believes they may have measles or has been exposed to seek medical attention while staying at home. This proactive approach helps prevent further exposure and ensures the well-being of the community.
While this is the first measles case in Davis County, Utah has reported a total of 102 confirmed cases as of Monday. This serves as a reminder that measles is a serious concern, and the community must remain vigilant and informed.
