After 35 years of refusals, the Brutalist Southbank Centre has finally been listed. Historic England advised the Department for Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) to Grade II list the centre's iconic Queen Elizabeth Hall, Purcell Room, and Hayward Gallery, along with its terraced walkways and stairs. This decision marks a significant victory for heritage preservation, as the centre had been the only post-war building on London's South Bank to remain unlisted. The Twentieth Century Society, which had been campaigning for this protection, hailed the decision as a triumph over those who dismissed Brutalist architecture as 'concrete monstrosities'. The society described the reinforced concrete complex as a 'post-war architectural masterpiece', renowned for its bold geometric formations and dramatic silhouette. The Southbank Centre, designed by the London County Council Special Works Group, including Warren Chalk and Ron Herron of Archigram, initially faced criticism for its design, with Daily Mail readers voting it 'Britain's ugliest building' upon its 1967 opening. However, the DCMS's 2018 refusal to list the building was met with strong opposition, with architectural historian Otto Saumarez-Smith and the Victorian Society accusing the government of undermining the integrity of the listing system. Despite low hopes, the latest listing bid, submitted almost a year ago, was finally accepted by heritage minister Fiona Twycross, who acknowledged the centre's architectural significance, including its use of exposed concrete and sculptural design. The Southbank Centre, a sophisticated arts complex, has been recognized as a national heritage site, with its refurbishment by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and Archer Humphryes Architects enhancing its appeal. The decision highlights the importance of preserving Brutalist architecture, which has been celebrated for its innovative design and cultural value.
