Bo Bichette has told teams he’s open to switching to second base moving forward, according to Mark Feinsand of MLB Network.
At 27, Bichette has spent the bulk of his pro career at shortstop, only shifting to second this fall during the World Series with the Toronto Blue Jays while recovering from a knee injury.
He’s among the top free agents this winter, with outfielder Kyle Tucker also drawing interest as Toronto weighs its options on both players.
Bichette delivered one of his strongest offensive seasons despite missing the final month due to a left knee issue. He posted a slash line of .311/.357/.483 with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs across 139 games. He was on pace to lead baseball in hits for the third time in his career, but his 181 hits fell just short of Bobby Witt Jr.’s MLB-best 184 after the late-season absence.
Bichette returned for Game 1 of the World Series and went 1-for-3 with six RBIs in the seven-game set. He belted a three-run homer off Shohei Ohtani in Game 7 to give Toronto a 3-0 lead, a cushion that ultimately wasn’t enough as the Jays fell short of ending their 32-year title drought.
“I’ll remember this group forever. This group has taught me what a team is. I think it’s probably the most valuable lesson of my career,” Bichette said the day after the season concluded.
Drafted by the Blue Jays in the second round of the 2016 MLB Draft, Bichette made his big-league debut in 2019 and has spent all seven of his MLB seasons in Toronto. He’s a two-time All-Star and has finished as high as 11th in AL MVP balloting.
